A consultation is where every good hair appointment starts. It's the conversation between you and your stylist that determines what's realistic for your hair, what the plan is, and what it's going to cost — before anyone picks up scissors or mixes color. At Burman & Co in Lone Tree, every service begins with one.

What Happens During a Hair Consultation?
A consultation isn't a separate, formal event — it's the first part of your appointment. When you sit down, your stylist will talk through what you want, assess your hair, and build a plan. Here's what that looks like in practice:
Your Stylist Evaluates Your Hair
Before discussing what you want to change, your stylist looks at what you're starting with. They'll assess your hair's current condition, texture, density, and any previous chemical work. This matters because your starting point determines which services are appropriate and how long the process will take.
For color services especially, your hair's history affects the formula. If you've had box color, previous lightening, or a keratin treatment, your stylist needs to know — it changes how color will process and what results are achievable in one session.
You Discuss Your Goals
This is where reference photos help. Your stylist will look at what you're hoping to achieve and tell you honestly what's possible given your current hair, your budget, and your maintenance preferences. A good consultation results in a plan you're both aligned on — not a vague "let's see how it turns out."
If you've read our guide on how to talk to your stylist, you'll already have a framework for this conversation.
You Get a Clear Price Before Work Begins
At Burman & Co, your stylist will confirm the total cost of your service before starting any work. If you need multiple services — for example, a tint retouch plus a toner and a deep conditioning treatment — they'll break down each line item so you know exactly what you're paying for.
You can review our full pricing on the services page ahead of time.
What to Bring to Your Consultation
Reference Photos
Bring 2 to 4 photos of what you want — and at least one of what you don't want. Photos taken in natural light are the most useful because salon lighting and Instagram filters can make colors look very different than they are.
Screenshots from social media work fine. Just keep in mind that the person in the photo may have a completely different hair type, density, and color history than yours. Your stylist will help you translate the inspiration into something that works for your specific hair.
Your Hair History
Be prepared to share:
- What color services you've had in the last year — salon color, box color, color depositing products, or henna
- Any chemical treatments — keratin treatments, relaxers, or perms
- How you typically style your hair at home — this affects what cuts and styles will work for your daily routine
- Any concerns — thinning, breakage, scalp sensitivity, or past color results you didn't like
The more your stylist knows, the better the outcome. There's no judgment here — knowing your full history helps avoid surprises during the service.
Your Schedule and Maintenance Preferences
How often you're willing to come back matters. A balayage that looks great at 12 weeks of grow-out is a different service than a highlight that needs refreshing every 6 weeks. Your stylist will factor your maintenance preferences into the plan.
If you're deciding between low-maintenance and high-maintenance options, our guides on balayage vs. foil highlights and balayage cost break down the tradeoffs.
When a Standalone Consultation Is Required
Most consultations happen at the start of your service appointment. But some services require a standalone consultation before you book:
- Extensions — An extensions consultation is required for new extension clients. It's free and gives your stylist time to assess your hair, discuss options, and order the right match before your installation appointment.
- Color corrections — If your hair has been significantly damaged by previous color work, or you need a major change from dark to light, your stylist may recommend a consultation visit first to build a realistic plan and timeline.
- Perms — Because perms depend heavily on your hair's condition and history, a consultation helps determine whether your hair is a good candidate and which technique is appropriate.
How a Consultation Protects Your Results
Skipping or rushing a consultation is how people end up with results they didn't expect. A thorough consultation:
- Sets realistic expectations — Your stylist tells you what one session can achieve vs. what might take two or three visits
- Prevents damage — If your hair can't handle a particular service safely, your stylist will tell you and suggest a different approach
- Saves money — Understanding the full plan upfront means no surprise costs and no paying for corrections later
- Builds a relationship — The better your stylist understands your preferences, the better your results get over time
