Prom Hair and Updo Styling in Lone Tree and Denver: What to Book, When to Book It, and What to Expect

Getting prom hair or an updo near Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch, or the south Denver suburbs? Here's exactly what to book, when to book it, what styles hold all night, and why Colorado spring weather matters more than you think.

Elegant updo hairstyle for prom and special occasion styling at Burman & Co salon in Lone Tree, Colorado

Prom season in the south Denver area runs through April and May, and every year the same pattern plays out at the salon: clients who book early get exactly the style they want at the time they need it, and clients who wait until two weeks before prom scramble for whatever's still open on a Saturday afternoon.

I've been styling prom hair, homecoming updos, graduation looks, and event hair for clients in Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Centennial, and across the south Denver suburbs for twenty years. The guide below is everything I'd tell a client — or their parent — sitting down in my chair for the first time: what styles hold, what actually needs to be booked ahead, how long everything takes, and what most people don't think about until it's too late.

When to Book Prom Hair in the Lone Tree and Denver Area

The most common question I get from prom clients isn't about styles — it's "do you still have openings?" Usually asked on a Thursday in early May.

Here's the reality: Saturday morning appointment slots in April and May are the first to go, and they go fast. Students from Highlands Ranch High School, ThunderRidge, Rock Canyon, Chaparral, Legend, and Cherry Creek-area schools all have proms within a few weeks of each other. One good Saturday can fill up with three or four prom appointments before February is over.

The booking timeline I recommend:

| What to Do | When | |---|---| | Call or message to check availability | 8–12 weeks before prom | | Book your appointment | As soon as you confirm your date | | Final color or cut appointment (if needed) | 2–4 weeks before prom | | Prom hair appointment | Morning of — allow 1 to 2 hours |

If your prom is in late April or early May, that means reaching out in February or March. Not because we're turning people away — but because the earlier you book, the more control you have over timing. The last person to call gets whatever slot is left, not the slot that fits their morning.

What Is Special Occasion Hair Styling?

Our special occasion styling service starts at $60 and covers any event-ready look: prom, homecoming, graduation, a gala, a formal dinner, a quinceañera, or anything else where you need hair that photographs well and holds for hours.

It's not the same as a regular blowout or Style Out. Special occasion styling involves:

  • A consultation at the start of the appointment to review your inspiration photos, your dress, your accessories, and any specific concerns about your hair
  • A blow dry and prep stage to build the foundation for the style
  • The actual styling — pinning, curling, braiding, or a combination — executed with professional-grade holding products
  • A final check with any hairpieces or accessories incorporated
  • Product and touch-up tips before you leave

The appointment typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the complexity of the style and your hair's length and density. Very long or very thick hair at the high end of that range; shorter or medium-density hair at the lower end. We'll give you a more specific time estimate when you book.

What Styles Work Best for Prom?

Prom hair falls into three broad categories, and the right one depends on your dress, the venue, and — this is important in Colorado — what the weather is doing that night.

Updos and Pinned Styles

Updos are the most reliably long-lasting option for a multi-hour event. Everything is pinned and secured, which means there's no hair falling in your face during photos, no style that loosens at the temples by 10 PM, and no dealing with Colorado wind.

Popular updo styles we do for prom:

  • Classic chignon or low bun — elegant, timeless, works with nearly any dress silhouette
  • High bun with face-framing pieces — more contemporary, good for strapless or off-shoulder necklines that need balance
  • Braided updo — detailed, photogenic, works especially well for clients with thick or long hair
  • Loose romantic updo — softer and less structured, best for clients who want an updo without it looking too formal
  • Textured low bun with a braid element — a popular hybrid that reads as both polished and current

If your prom venue has outdoor elements — a rooftop, a garden, a venue with open-air spaces — an updo is the practical choice. Colorado spring evenings are windy and unpredictable. An updo stays where it was put.

Half-Up Styles

Half-up styles are a strong middle ground: some security from having the crown section pinned, but the rest of the hair down and flowing. They work well for clients who want something that feels more relaxed without sacrificing the dressed-up quality.

  • Half-up with curled ends — the most versatile; flatters most face shapes and hair lengths
  • Half-up with a braided crown — more intricate, great for bohemian or cottagecore aesthetics
  • Twisted half-up — elegant and clean, less structured than a braid

The main practical note: half-up styles with down hair require more holding product and benefit from hair that curls well and holds a set. Fine, straight hair that doesn't naturally hold a curl is going to require more work to maintain through a long evening — we'll discuss that during the consultation.

Down Styles

Fully down styles — soft waves, defined curls, sleek straight — are absolutely appropriate for prom and can look stunning. The honest caveat is that they require the most upkeep during a long night. If you're going to be outdoors at any point, if it's windy or humid, or if you're the type to touch your hair when you're nervous or dancing, a down style will look less like it did at 7 PM by the time midnight comes around.

That's not a reason to avoid them — it's just information. We can use stronger hold products, longer-lasting curl techniques, and anti-humidity spray to extend the life of a down style significantly. But I'd rather you know what you're signing up for than be surprised at 11 PM.

Booking a Trial Run for Prom

For weddings, a trial run is standard. For prom, most clients skip it — and usually that's fine for experienced clients with straightforward styles. But there are situations where I recommend a prom trial:

  • If you have hair that doesn't hold a style well. Fine, slippery hair that falls flat quickly is best tested before the day of so we know what products and techniques actually work on your specific hair.
  • If you're attempting something complex or specific. An elaborate braided updo or a very precise recreation of a photo reference is better tested first than attempted cold on the morning of your prom.
  • If you've never had your hair professionally styled before. A trial takes the anxiety out of the experience entirely — you know exactly what to expect, and we know exactly what your hair does.

Trials are booked as a regular specialty style appointment at the same starting price as the prom appointment. We typically schedule them 1 to 2 weeks before the event.

If you're not doing a trial, bring your inspiration photos to the appointment and arrive with clean, day-old hair (not freshly washed the same morning). Hair with a little texture holds styles better than hair washed an hour before the appointment.

What to Tell Us When You Book

The more information you give us up front, the better the appointment goes. When you call or reach out to book:

Tell us:

  • Your prom or event date and what time you need to be ready by
  • The general style direction you're thinking (updo, half-up, down, or "I have no idea yet")
  • Your hair length and whether it's been recently colored, relaxed, or chemically treated
  • Whether you'll be wearing a veil, hairpiece, clip, or any other accessories

At the appointment, bring:

  • Inspiration photos. Not to recreate exactly, but to communicate the mood and direction. A Pinterest screenshot is worth more than a paragraph of description. Bring two or three options if you haven't fully decided.
  • Your accessories. If you're wearing a hairpiece, clip, tiara, or any other accessory, bring it to the appointment so we can incorporate it correctly rather than guessing.
  • A button-down or zip-up top. This is one of the most overlooked practical details. After your hair is done, you don't want to pull a pullover shirt over your head — it will disrupt the style. Wear something that opens at the front or back.

How Colorado Spring Weather Affects Your Style Choice

This matters more than most prom guides admit, and it's something I bring up with every spring event client.

Colorado in April and May is not reliably mild. Late-season snow in the metro area happens. Wind is a near-certainty in the evenings. Temperature swings between late afternoon and evening are common. None of this is catastrophic for your hair, but it's worth factoring in.

If your prom has any outdoor component — photos outside, a venue with outdoor spaces, a parking lot walk — an updo with proper pinning is going to hold up significantly better than loose waves. Even a partially outdoor event where you're outside for twenty minutes of photos can do visible damage to a carefully-curled down style if it's windy.

If your prom is entirely indoors at a climate-controlled venue, this matters much less. Down styles, half-ups, and soft waves are all appropriate for a ballroom or event center setting.

When you book, tell us whether there's an outdoor component. We'll factor it into style and product recommendations. It's a small detail that can meaningfully change what we reach for.

Beyond Prom: Other Events We Style For

Special occasion styling at Burman & Co isn't limited to prom season. The same service covers:

Homecoming. Same considerations as prom, slightly earlier in the fall (typically September or October). The booking timeline is shorter but the same logic applies — Saturday mornings fill up. Book 4 to 6 weeks out.

Graduation. Graduation styling is increasingly popular, especially for high school and college ceremonies where students want to look their best under those cap photos. Graduation ceremonies in the Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch area typically run May through June.

Galas, charity events, and formal dinners. The south Denver metro has a significant number of fundraiser galas and formal corporate events, especially in the fall. These book well — we often see clients coming in from Greenwood Village, the Denver Tech Center corridor, and the Cherry Hills area for event styling.

Quinceañeras and sweet sixteens. Intricate event styles are a meaningful part of quinceañera tradition, and we have experience with the elaborate updo and curl work these ceremonies call for.

Formal family photos. Spring and fall family portrait sessions are common, and parents and adult children often want a polished blowout or styled look for the occasion.

For any event, the same logic applies: the earlier you book, the better the slot selection. Same-week availability for Saturday event styling is unpredictable — sometimes there's room, sometimes there isn't.

What About Hair Color Before Prom?

Many prom clients want to refresh or update their color before their big night — new highlights, a fresh balayage, a toner to knock out the brassiness. Absolutely worth doing. The timing just matters.

Schedule color 2 to 4 weeks before prom, not the week of. Fresh color — especially highlights or bleach services — benefits from a few washes before it fully settles and looks its best. Hair colored the day before prom may still have product residue, a slightly fresh smell from the processing, and color that hasn't reached its final settled tone. Timing the color appointment 2 to 4 weeks out lets the color settle, your hair recover, and gives us a proper starting point for the style appointment.

If you want to update your color before prom, start with our color services or highlights menu. Book the color appointment first, then the style appointment closer to the date.

A toner appointment 2 weeks before prom is a smart move for clients with highlights or balayage who want their blonde to look crisp and brass-free in photos. Our professional toner service starts at $60 and takes under an hour. The results last 4 to 6 weeks — perfectly timed to cover your prom night.
